Issue #29 - Before you go to a homeschool conference

From Laura's Desk

Hello!

I'm back from the San Antonio homeschool conference! I had a great time meeting people and enjoyed that great Texas hospitality.

While I was giving my talk, something stood out to me that I wanted to share with you as you begin (or maybe you've already started) planning your curriculum for next year.

So many times we get into planning the next year, get all excited about all of the things we want to cover, go to a conference or go online and order ALL the books and then realize that there is no way we are ever going to be able to cover it all!

What I want to impress upon you is this: You only have so much time in each day in which to do your schoolwork. You need to decide how much time that is going to be. If you allocate all day (say from 9 to 3) then that doesn't leave you much time to do anything else. You might get a lot of schoolwork done, but those errands and chores and everything else will likely suffer.

If you shorten the time you allow for school, you'll have more time to accomplish other things, but you definitely will not complete a ton of subjects; especially if you have multiple children in multiple "grades".

You really need to sit down and decide how much of your day you want to allocate to school. Then you need to decide, realistically, how much work you can accomplish during that time and then buy your curriculum accordingly.

Let me stress this: YOU CANNOT SPEND ALL DAY DOING SCHOOL AND EXPECT TO GET EVERYTHING ELSE DONE, TOO! I'm not shouting at you, I just want you to realize that before you go out and over-buy on your books.

As the years went on and I had more kids to school, I realized that I couldn't do everything that I wanted to do in the time I had. That's why I had to start scheduling my day and paring down my curriculum. Sanity had to reign so things had to change. Next newsletter I'll get into some things I did to change this up.

I'd also like to invite you to like my Catholic Homeschooling Resources Facebook Page and follow it so that you can see what's going on.

Have a great week and as always, feel free to let me know if there is something you'd like me to focus on!
