Organizing Your
Home School

Organizing your home school might seem like a momentous task, but once it is done, it will be well worth the effort. It wasn't too long into my home schooling career when I realized that I needed to organize my homeschool day in order for me to maintain my sanity. The more children I added to my homeschool, the crazier it got. I would be in the middle of trying to help one child while another was standing at my side wanting to know what they should be doing next.

A person can only take so much chaos before they start to lose their patience!

I discovered that by organizing my day into 1/2 hour chunks of time, my life became more manageable. I will tell you that this took some time to learn and to implement, but once we got our schedule up and running, everyone was much happier.

The kids loved it because they knew exactly what they were supposed to be doing at exactly what time they were supposed to be doing it. If anyone interrupted me to find out what to do next, I could just point to the schedule and tell them to follow it. After awhile, the kids were reminding me what time it was and what it was we were supposed to be doing.

I'd like to say that this isn't just about organizing your home school, it is really about scheduling your entire day. You need to find out just how much time you have in a day to do the things you need to do. It really is about wrapping up all of the pages in this section into one neat package.

Yes, homeschooling does take up a big chunk of our day. What I needed to find out was exactly how big of a chunk was necessary. Once I had that figured out, I was able to add in how much time I needed for meal prep, eating and clean up. How much time did I want to spend on chores each day? I figured that out and added it to my schedule. After I got all these pieces built in, I was able to see how much time I had left over to accomplish other things.

Really, how can you take on other projects if you don't know how much time you need to accomplish the necessary things each day? Is it right to overload yourself with outside things and then leave important things like schooling or chores or meals by the wayside? Once you conquer organizing your home school, you will see that there really is only a certain amount of time you have in which to add other outside activities.

If schooling and chores and prayers are important elements in your day, make sure they have their time and don't get kicked out by other things!

You might be wondering how you go about doing this. Well, I have put together a workshop entitled

"A Plan For Joy In the Home - A Workshop on Organizing Your Day For Catholic Home Schooling Mothers".

It is a five hour workshop where we look at the major areas of your life - prayer, chores, meals, school and family/husband/personal time - talk about them, pray about them and then get to work trying to prioritize and organize them. Once we go through each of the areas, I then walk you through step by step on how to put them into a master schedule.

I have conducted this workshop and have found that it really is helpful to all different types of women. Even women who are organized have found something that can help them in their day.

Since I have a family of my own and it is impossible for me to get to as many places as I would like, I am working on putting all of this information into a workbook format so that you can work on this process by yourself. God willing, it will be available soon.

If you would like information on hosting a workshop for yourself and other homeschooling mothers, just check out this page. It will give you all of the necessary details and provide you with a contact form.

In the meantime, think about how you can start organizing your home school day into blocks of time so that everyone knows what to be doing and when to be doing it. Make up a schedule that everyone can follow. Our God is a God of order. try organizing your home school as well as the rest of your day, and everyone in your family will benefit!
