One of my favorite months is right around the corner - November. There is something about being re-connected with all of my family and friends that have gone before me that bring a feeling of peace and joy to my heart.

Besides the closeness I feel to my deceased relatives, I also feel close to those that are living because, as the days begin to shorten and get colder, we all start to snuggle in a little more and "hunker down" together for the long winter ahead. The fireplace gets going and the hot chocolate starts heating up, all of which bring a warm glow to my face and my heart.

Then there's Thanksgiving, when we get to take yet another special day to truly thank the Lord for all of the incredible blessings He has given us.

Having a thankful heart also puts us in the mood for the coming season of Advent, which begins on November 28th this year; a time of the year when we can prepare for the great gift of the Lord to His unworthy people.

I hope you enjoy November as much as I do. Take some time to enjoy the change of seasons, whatever they may entail :) and be thankful for the many blessings in your life - especially the gift of being able to homeschool :)

    Homeschooling Tips and Ideas

After having this website for the past few years, I am a bit surprised that one of my most visited pages is the "All Saints Day Party" page. In case you haven't seen it yet, just jump on over there and check it out for all of the great ideas that we've done over the years with our homeschool group. This is one of the biggest events we have every year. The kids love it and it is a great addition to, or even substitution for Halloween.

You can go here and check it out!

This year we will be attending the first ever All Saints' Day party at our parish. If there are any new ideas, I will add them to the website page for next year!

    Read Aloud Review

This newsletter I thought that I would stick with the theme of the Holy Souls and tell you about an incredible book called "Get Us Our Of Here!" by Maria Simms with Nicky Eltz.

This book is the story of a woman who was visited by various holy souls in Purgatory. At first it took her awhile to figure out who they were and what they wanted, but eventually she learned to ask "What is it you need of me?" and then do whatever it was they asked her to do.

There is such a plethora of wealth tucked into this book that I can't even begin to get into all of it. The souls who would come to Maria usually came asking for prayers and Masses so that they could be released from Purgatory, but they also allowed her to ask questions. There are sections that talk about holiness, the Blessed Mother, prayer, Holy Communion and reparation for sin to name just a few.

Reading this book gave me a whole new appreciation for praying for the Holy Souls and for making even very small acts of reparation for them.

If you are looking for an excellent book to read during the month of the Souls, I would highly recommend this one.

    The Saintly Corner

By now you've figured out that I really like the month of and praying for the Holy Souls. Besides beginning this month with two powerful days of prayer, November is filled with other great feast days that you can celebrate. Consider picking one saint a week and doing some research about who they were and why they became saints. Pick a virtue or pious practice that goes along with them and practice that for the week.

For example, the second week of November we have St. Martin of Tours when you could practice the quiet life of prayer. During the third week is St. Elizabeth of Hungary - practice charity and giving to the poor. While not much is known about the life of St. Cecilia, she is associated with music and poetry. Prepare some beautiful music and/or poetry to give thanks to God during Thanksgiving week.

One activity that we like to do during the month of November is to print out a blank calendar and put the name of a deceased relative or friend on each of the days of the month. Each day we include that special person in all of our prayers: the rosary, Mass and personal intentions. It really makes us all feel close to that person again. I also enjoy telling my kids stories about these people since the younger ones never knew most of them.

Our faith is so rich, I hope you take some time during the coming month to really delve into it with your families, too! To help you along that path, be sure to check out one of my favorite sites Catholic Icing for great crafts and ideas!

    New Product Announcements

I haven't come out with anything new for homeschooling since the last newsletter as I've been busy getting our school year underway!

We have, however, been working on getting another website going for some great goat milk soap that we sell. If you're interested in some good-for-you, all-natural soap then make sure you check out The Goat Milk Soap Shop.

Alright, so if you go there right now you won't see a whole lot, but hopefully within a few weeks we'll have our pages up that will enable you to order some of this very moisturizing soap.

Think ahead to Christmas, too. Our soap makes a great gift for teachers, coaches, grab bags and bosses! If you have questions, feel free to go to the contact page and send me a note. I'd be happy to help you in any way I can.

I look forward to seeing you over there!

    Our Favorite Recipes

This is a great snack mix to bring to your upcoming All Saints Day Party. It might not be the healthiest thing, but boy is it good. The kids love the pumpkin candies and candy corn, so trying to get them not to pick them all out first is a challenge! Hope you enjoy it!

    Jack-O-Lantern Jumble

    4 C Corn Chex cereal
    4 C Rice Chex cereal
    2 C salted peanuts
    1/4 C butter
    1/4 C peanut butter
    2 1/4 tsp Worcestershire sauce
    1/2 tsp salt
    1/4 tsp garlic powder
    2 cups candy corn

In a large bowl, combine the cereal and peanuts. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, peanut butter, Worcestershire sauce, salt and garlic powder; cook and stir until butter and peanut butter are melted. Pour over cereal mixture and toss to coat. Spread onto a greased 15x10x1 baking pan. Bake at 250 degrees for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Cool; stir in candy corn. Store in an air tight container.
